“Every journey has a secret destination of which the traveler is unaware.” – Martin Buber

Deeply rooted in ancient tradition, the Enneagram types are stories that we tell ourselves and each other about how we make our place in the world and what really matters. Ultimately, these stories are about finding our way Home, to who we really are and what we may become.

In this practical, interactive workshop, drawing from classical myth and profound stories, Michael offers:

  • A fresh look at the nature of our Type patterns and the Enneagram itself
  • Guidance for loosening the habitual patterns of Type so as to become a more imaginative and meaningful teller of your story
  • A practical frame for working with this approach for oneself, and as a teacher and guide for others
  • A deeper understanding of where you are in your journey and what may lie ahead

Throughout human history, great truths have been passed on through story, for those ready to hear. As Michael says, “The telling of powerful stories is also, in my experience, great fun, with lots of lively interaction fueled by the shock of recognition, and questions and comments as we go. But the adventures hold deep, affecting wisdom, as well as uncanny practical advice.”

The first story is Homer’s Odyssey, which recounts the great homecoming of Odysseus. On his ten year journey, Odysseus meets each of the nine ennea-types in exact numerical order. As Michael revealed in his book, Travels with Odysseus, each adventure is a teaching story with a memorable and affecting turn of events; Homer has a startling knack to distill the core of type. Each of Odysseus’s encounters sets up the next, teaching the Enneagram as flow, rather than static boxes.

And from Michael’s new book, to be published soon, he will share two magical, psychologically rich and layered, ancient adventures: the first tells how Type patterns come to be; the second is a guide of “what to do” with stuck patterns once you have them. And we all have them!

Through dyads and group-as-a-whole discussion, participants can share their real-life stories, insights, memories and experiences that resonate with these ennea-stories. Michael includes lecturettes and mini-panels.
This workshop is suitable for all levels of experience with the Enneagram. No prior familiarity with, or love of, myth is necessary.

Michael has taught the Enneagram worldwide for thirty years. He is the author of The 9 Ways of Working and Travels with Odysseus. He consults with the Enneagram to organizations including the Central Intelligence Agency, Honeywell, South African Airways, and TopHuman (China). He has been on over one hundred television and radio programs, including Fox News Channel, CNN, CBC (Canada) and ABC (Australia.) Michael has taught at graduate schools of law, management and psychology. He was an attorney at the US Office of Government Ethics.
